The Indianapolis International Airport is home to the world's second-largest FedEx Express hub. The hub, which opened in 1988, has expanded significantly over the years. In 1998, a $260 million five-phase expansion nearly tripled the size of the facility to 2.4 million square feet, making it the second-largest FedEx hub in the nation. In 2006, a further 400,000-square-foot expansion was announced, and in 2021, FedEx announced plans to invest $1.5 billion to expand operations over the next seven years. The hub now employs about 700 full-time and 3,000 part-time workers and can sort more than 2 million packages a day. The expansion has also helped the Indianapolis Airport remain one of the top 10 largest cargo airports in the country.
