The airport was officially dedicated on 20 December 1924. By January 1925, private plane owners were leasing space at the new municipal airport. In 1928, the city built a hangar and administrative building for the United States Navy, which commissioned the field as a Naval Reserve air base. In 1930, the city built similar facilities for the United States Army Air Corps. In 1938, new runways were constructed with funds from the Works Progress Administration (WPA), and an additional 255 acres were purchased in 1939 for a new administrative building.
Long Beach Airport has one terminal in Streamline Moderne style, designed by W. Horace Austin and Kenneth Wing in 1941. The terminal features nautical portholes and heroic floor mosaics by artist Grace Clements, incorporating over a million hand-cut tiles. It was recognised as a historical landmark by the City of Long Beach in 1990.
In 2005, the airport began exploring updates to its passenger facilities, engaging CH2M Hill engineers and HOK to produce an environmental impact report (EIR).
