Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) is the second-largest airport in North Carolina, serving Raleigh and the Research Triangle and Piedmont regions of the state. The airport is located in Wake County, between Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill.
The region's first airport, Raleigh Municipal Airport, opened in 1929, south of Raleigh. However, this airport was quickly outgrown, and in 1939, the North Carolina General Assembly chartered the Raleigh–Durham Aeronautical Authority to build and operate a larger airport between Raleigh and Durham.
On May 1, 1943, the first commercial flight landed at what was then Raleigh-Durham Army Airfield—a DC-3 aircraft operated by Eastern Airlines, which originated in New York and was destined for Florida. The passenger terminal was built from materials left over after the construction of four barracks for the Army Air Forces Air Technical Service Command airfield. The airport had three runways, which are still visible on the southeast side of the airport: 4,500-ft runway 5, 4,500-ft runway 18, and 4,490-ft runway 14.
After World War II, Capital Airlines joined Eastern at RDU, and Piedmont Airlines arrived in 1948. By April 1957, the Official Airline Guide showed 36 departures a day: 20 Eastern, eight Capital, and eight Piedmont. Nonstop flights did not go beyond Washington, Atlanta, or the Appalachians. However, in 1958, Eastern started a Super Constellation nonstop to Newark.
RDU's Terminal 1 opened in 1955 and was modernized in 2014. Terminal 2, which is larger, opened in 2008. Today, RDU serves more than 11.8 million passengers annually, with nonstop flights from 70+ markets.
