The history of Stewart International Airport dates back to the 1930s when it was developed as a military base for aviation training. In 1930, Thomas "Archie" Stewart, an early aviation enthusiast, convinced his uncle, Samuel Stewart, to donate a piece of land called "Stoney Lonesome" to the nearby city of Newburgh for use as an airport. This land was split between the towns of Newburgh and New Windsor. However, due to financial constraints caused by the Depression, the city of Newburgh was unable to develop the land. In 1934, Douglas MacArthur, the superintendent of the United States Military Academy, proposed using the airport for flight training cadets, and the city sold the land to the military academy for one dollar.
