It is the third-largest and third-busiest airport in Pennsylvania for passenger enplanements and cargo shipments. The airport covers 680 acres (280 ha) at an elevation of 310 feet (94 m) above sea level and has one asphalt runway.
The airport has a long history, dating back to the late 19th century. During the Spanish-American War, a portion of the airport property was part of Camp George G. Meade, a military reception centre that housed up to 30,000 recruits. In 1898, the Signal Corps of the U.S. Army was stationed on the present site of the airport, and the first airplanes landed in 1918. The base was renamed the Olmsted Air Force Base after World War II and provided logistical and maintenance support for military aircraft until it closed in 1969.
In 1968, airline flights moved to the former U.S. Air Force base, which was renamed the Olmsted State Airport. The airport was then renamed Harrisburg International Airport in 1973, with new terminals designed by architect William Pereira. From April 1969 through May 1971, American Flyers Airline, a supplemental air carrier, was based at Olmsted State Airport, offering charter flights to Europe.
