Floyd Bennett Field is a former airfield in Brooklyn
The airfield was established by connecting Barren Island and several smaller islands to the rest of Brooklyn. This was achieved by filling the channels between them with sand pumped from the depths of Jamaica Bay. The airport was named after Floyd Bennett, a renowned aviator who achieved the feat of piloting the first plane to fly over the North Pole. Bennett had also envisioned the concept of an airport in this location.
In April 1931, the Naval Reserve Aviation Unit started using Floyd Bennett Field, leasing Hangar 1 for $1 per year. As they required more space, the unit soon relocated to Hangar 5. The NYPD also occupied a hangar in 1934 for the world's inaugural police aviation unit. In 1935, the United States Coast Guard requested a portion of the airfield, and in 1936, a 10-acre area was leased to them for the establishment of Coast Guard Air Station Brooklyn (CGAS Brooklyn).

In 1944, they began testing Navy craft and training their pilots. The Navy demolished temporary structures and renovated the recreation field on the southern side of the airfield. The NYPD Aviation Unit recommenced its operations at this Naval Air Reserve base.
