SMF opened on October 21, 1967, as Sacramento Metropolitan Airport, with one 8,600-foot runway on the west side of the airfield. The airfield itself was called Sacramento Metropolitan Field. Sacramento Metropolitan was the first purpose-built public-use airport west of the Mississippi. The airport initially served over a million passengers in its first year, exceeding its projected figures of 750,000. The original terminal, Terminal B, was built in 1967 and had 14 gates.
