Antônio Carlos Brasileiro de Almeida Jobim, also known as Tom Jobim, was a Brazilian composer, pianist, guitarist, songwriter, arranger, and singer. He is regarded as one of the most important exponents of Brazilian music, merging samba with cool jazz in the 1960s to create bossa nova, which became a worldwide success. Jobim was born in the Tijuca district of Rio de Janeiro in 1927 and is considered one of the fathers of bossa nova. He began playing the piano at age 14, an instrument given to his sister by their stepfather. He quickly demonstrated a talent for music, and his stepfather arranged for him to be taught by a series of highly accomplished classically trained musicians.
Jobim initially pursued a career in architecture, but he soon became disenchanted with the field and left to devote himself to music. He performed in the clubs of Rio de Janeiro, transcribed songs for composers, arranged music for recording artists, and eventually became the music director of Odeon Records, one of Brazil's largest record companies.
