What You'll Learn

South Bend International Airport's history and expansion
South Bend International Airport (SBN) is a commercial and freight airport located three miles northwest of downtown South Bend, in St. Joseph County, Indiana, United States. The airport is one of the few multi-modal transportation facilities in America that provides air, interstate bus, and interstate rail services at one terminal.
The airport's history can be traced back to 1911 when French aviator René Simon completed the area's first recorded airplane flight. However, the airport's establishment dates to 1929 when Vincent Bendix, the founder of the Bendix Aviation Corporation, purchased 610 acres of land northwest of South Bend, Indiana. The airport has undergone several name changes throughout its history, including Bendix Municipal Airport, Bendix Field – St. Joseph County Airport, Michiana Regional Airport, Michiana Regional Transportation Center, and South Bend Regional Airport. On April 23, 2014, the St. Joseph County Airport Authority officially changed the name to South Bend International Airport to better reflect its status and improve its recognition among travellers.
The airport has also expanded and evolved over the years. In the 1950s, it had four runways, with runway 9 being the longest at 5,000 feet. By 1963-1965, runway 9 was extended to 6,000 feet, and in January 1967, the airport welcomed its first scheduled jets, with United Caravelles flying the Chicago O'Hare-South Bend-Fort Wayne-Newark route. The terminal, built in 1981, has also seen expansions and renovations, including a significant expansion in 2011 by Ken Herceg & Parpandy Associates, adding a nine-gate concourse. In 2020, the airfield began undergoing expansive geometry changes, including the re-alignment of Taxiway Bravo, and in 2024, modifications were made to refurbish an existing gate, bringing the total number of gates to nine.
Today, South Bend International Airport offers nonstop and affordable flight options with airlines such as Allegiant, American Airlines, Delta, and United. The airport handles a significant volume of passenger traffic, ranking as the second busiest airport in Indiana for passenger enplanements, and provides important connections to local public transportation services, including train and bus routes.
