The airport is owned by the City of New Smyrna Beach and is one of the busiest and fastest-growing airports in the region, accommodating more than 170,000 operations each year.
Prior to World War II, the present airport site was home to a golf course and a grass airstrip. In 1942, the site was taken over by the U.S. Navy, and a paved runway complex was constructed. Designated as Navy Outlying Landing Field New Smyrna Beach, it served as an auxiliary field for advanced naval flight training operations at nearby Naval Air Stations in Daytona Beach, Sanford, and DeLand. During this time, the facility incorporated four intersecting asphalt runways, three of which remain operational today.
In 1947, the Navy Outlying Landing Field New Smyrna Beach was decommissioned, and the facility was returned to the City of New Smyrna Beach for use as a civilian airport.
