Airport history
The history of aviation in Myrtle Beach dates back to before the town existed. In August 1928, a grass landing strip was opened near the current intersection of Seaboard Street and Mr. Joe White Avenue. This makeshift runway was built by one of John T. Woodside's companies, Myrtle Beach Estates, to attract wealthy investors.
On March 12, 1938, the town of Myrtle Beach was incorporated. Two years later, on October 16, 1939, the Myrtle Beach Town Council agreed to purchase 135 acres of land at $35 per acre from the Myrtle Beach Farms Company, Inc. with the intention of building a "modern municipal airport". The airport was named "Harrelson Municipal Airport" in honour of the town's first mayor, W.L. Harrelson, who led the effort.
However, in December 1941, just days before the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Myrtle Beach Town Council voted to sell the airport to the U.S. War Department for $3,500, where it served as an aerial gunnery and bombing range during World War II. The airport was officially renamed the Myrtle Beach Bombing Range in May 1942 and was used as a training facility for the United States Army Air Corps. After the war, in 1947, the airport was returned to the City of Myrtle Beach and the United States Air Force was established.
In 1954, with the onset of the Cold War, the City of Myrtle Beach offered to donate the airport to the Air Force once again, and the "Myrtle Beach Air Force Base" was established. From 1958 to 1976, funds from the federal government's transfer of property were used to develop the Horry County Jetport in Crescent Beach, which allowed for joint civilian and military use. In 1977, the City of Myrtle Beach annexed the area of Myrtle Beach Airport, and until 1993, both the airport and the Air Force Base jointly used the main runway, limiting civilian operations.
