The airport was previously known as the Northwest Florida Regional Airport until February 17, 2015, when it changed its name to Destin–Fort Walton Beach Airport. Prior to that, it was named the Okaloosa Regional Airport until September 2008. The airport has a long history, with the Okaloosa County Air Terminal opening on Eglin Air Force Base in 1957, offering direct flights to Atlanta via Southern Airways.
In the 1980s, Republic Airlines was the only carrier providing nonstop flights between VPS and Atlanta, using DC-9-10, DC-9-30, and DC-9-50 jets. Delta Air Lines and Eastern Air Lines later introduced nonstop flights to Atlanta via their regional partners, Delta Connection and Eastern Metro Express, respectively. Delta Connection's service was operated by Atlantic Southeast Airlines using turboprop aircraft.
