Pensacola International Airport's history
Pensacola International Airport has a long history that dates back to the 1920s and 1930s. In 1933, Lee Conner Hagler and Harry Blanchard purchased 504 acres of wooded land northeast of Pensacola, Florida. They cleared space for two grass airstrips and set up a surplus Navy hangar. On April 7, 1934, the first commercial flight landed in Pensacola—a 14-passenger tri-motor Stinson from Atlantic and Gulf Coast Airlines.
In 1935, the City of Pensacola bought the airfield for $50,000 and appointed Blanchard as the manager. With the help of the Works Progress Administration, the city developed Hagler Field into a permanent municipal airport. A passenger terminal opened in 1935, and airline service began two years later. However, Atlantic and Gulf Airlines went out of business a few months later after failing to secure an airmail contract. In 1937 or 1938, National Airlines began flights to Mobile and Jacksonville. From 1940 to 1945, the airport served as a U.S. Navy training facility, during which time the Navy built a control tower and added a fourth runway. In 1947, Eastern Air Lines started service out of Pensacola, and in 1952, a modern terminal replaced the original. The airport was dedicated to L.C. Hagler, Pensacola's former mayor.
In 1968, Eastern began the first scheduled jet service from Pensacola. In 1978, after the airline industry was deregulated, several new airlines began serving Pensacola, including Continental and Delta. Unfortunately, this year also saw the first fatal airline accident in the area, when a National Airlines Boeing 727 crashed into Escambia Bay.
In 2011, the airport changed its name from Pensacola Gulf Coast Regional Airport to Pensacola International Airport. As of 2020, the airport sits on over 1,200 acres of land at an elevation of 121 feet and consists of commercial and private air service, as well as aeronautical and cargo businesses. It is one of five major airports in North Florida and the second largest by passenger count. Pensacola International Airport continues to adapt to new markets, aircraft, and technologies, with several ongoing capital improvement projects to accommodate its rapid growth.
