It is named after two of the "founding fathers of Canada", Sir John A. Macdonald and Sir George-Étienne Cartier. The airport consists of two distinct airfields connected by a taxiway. The smaller north field, originally called Uplands, was founded by the Ottawa Flying Club in the late 1920s.
