History of Daytona Beach Airport
Daytona Beach International Airport (IATA: DAB, ICAO: KDAB, FAA LID: DAB) is a county-owned airport located three miles (5 km) southwest of Daytona Beach, next to Daytona International Speedway, in Volusia County, Florida, United States. The airport has 3 runways, a six-gate domestic terminal, and an international terminal. Daytona Beach is the headquarters of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
The history of aviation in Daytona Beach dates back to the early days of flight when the white sands of Daytona Beach served as a runway for daredevil pilots who were hired as entertainment by local hotels. The beach became Volusia County's first airport, and soon a Pitcairn Airwing began making regular airmail deliveries there. Daytona Beach was also the site of the first twin-engine aircraft takeoff. In 1928, the City of Daytona Beach moved its airport from the beach to Bethune Point along the Halifax River. Florida State Airways, Inc. was formed in early 1930, carrying passengers to other Florida cities and the Bahamas. However, the death of its Vice President of Operations, Bill Lindley, in a plane crash, combined with the Great Depression, brought aviation activity in Daytona Beach to a near halt.
In late 1930, a 740-acre piece of land was transformed into the current airport site, just a few hundred feet from International Speedway Boulevard. The airport, initially called Sholtz Field, after the then-Governor of Florida, who was from Daytona Beach, featured two gravel runways. Before long, the airport's name changed to Daytona Beach Municipal Airport. In 1933, the airport was closed for repairs, and National Airlines took the opportunity to win the bid for the cross-state route from Daytona Beach to St. Petersburg. When World War II broke out, the US Navy took over the airport for training purposes, renaming it Naval Air Station Daytona Beach.
After the war, in 1946, the airport was returned to the City of Daytona Beach. Construction of the first terminal and hangars began in 1952, and passenger and cargo service grew rapidly throughout the decade. In 1958, a new, modern terminal was built with federal funding, including amenities such as a restaurant, bar, gift shop, and barbershop. In the 1960s, jet flights began operating at the airport, and in 1969, Volusia County took over the management of the airport, renaming it Daytona Beach Regional Airport.
In 1992, the airport underwent a significant transformation, adding an international terminal and extending one of its runways to 10,500 feet to accommodate larger aircraft. With these developments, the airport was renamed Daytona Beach International Airport. Today, Daytona Beach International Airport offers flights from carriers such as Delta Air Lines and American Airlines, providing passengers with a convenient and modern travel experience.
