The Bahamas has 20 international airports, with dozens of non-stop and connecting commercial flights arriving from around the world every day. Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas, is the base for Bahamasair, the national airline of the Bahamas and the country's largest airline.
Bahamasair Holdings Limited, stylized as 'bahamasaır', is headquartered in Nassau, on the island of New Providence. The airline was established by the Bahamas Government and began operations on 17 June 1973, acquiring the routes of Flamingo Airlines and Out Island Airways (OIA). The government purchased 51% of OIA, becoming the majority shareholder, and the airline was renamed Bahamasair.
The first Bahamasair flight was to Andros Island, and the second was to Freeport, Grand Bahama. In the early years, Bahamasair encountered operating difficulties, including poor maintenance facilities and an unfavourable company structure, which led to public distrust. However, the airline soon acquired new jet airliners, including BAC One-Eleven twin jets and a Boeing 737-200.
