Heathrow's history began in 1929 when Richard Fairey, founder of Fairey Aviation, bought 71 acres of land near southeast of the hamlet of Heathrow. The first plot of land was purchased from the Rev. R. Ross, vicar of Harmondsworth. In June 1930, the airfield was declared operational, and it was first called Harmondsworth Aerodrome, then The Great West Aerodrome, and sometimes Heathrow Aerodrome. The site was bounded to the northeast by Cain's Lane, to the south by the Duke of Northumberland's River, and to the west by High Tree Lane. The airfield boundaries were south of the Bath Road, northwest of the Great South West Road, and about two miles west of the western end of the Great West Road.
Fairey Aviation continued to purchase land, and by 1943, the company owned 240 acres of land. In 1935, the first Fairey's airshow was held, and a description in The Aeroplane magazine (8 May 1935) called the place "Heathrow Aerodrome, Harmondsworth". In 1939, the last Fairey's airshow was held, and a brochure from this event called the place "Great West Aerodrome, near Hayes", with no mention of Heathrow. During World War II, the airfield was used by the RAF for diversions, and in 1944, it was greatly enlarged to become London Airport. The airport was opened on 25 March 1946.
In the early 20th century, the area around Heathrow was a mix of rural roads, farms, and orchards. The lane called Heathrow divided farmland and heath until 1819, when the heath also became farmland. Heathrow was known for its fruit trees, bushes, and market gardens, and agriculture was the main source of income for residents in the hamlet. In the 1930s, Heathrow Hall and Perry Oaks were mixed farms, while the other farms were largely market gardening and fruit growing.
