Mykonos Airport, or Mykonos International Airport, is the airport on the Greek island of Mykonos. It is located 3.5-4km from Chora/Mykonos Town, the island's main village. The airport has one terminal and one runway, and serves domestic flights as well as international flights within Europe and the Middle East. As of 2017, the airport is managed by the joint venture of Fraport AG and Copelouzos Group, who plan to implement changes including expanding and remodelling the terminal, increasing the number of check-in counters, departure gates, and security lanes. As of 2021, there are seven departure gates at Mykonos Airport.

Mykonos Airport's history and ownership

Mykonos Airport, officially known as Mykonos-Manto Mavrogenous Airport (IATA: JMK, ICAO: LGMK), serves the popular Greek island of Mykonos and is located 4 kilometres (2.5 miles) from the town of Mykonos. The airport first began operations in June 1971 with a 1900-meter runway and has since become an important gateway to the island, particularly during the peak summer season.

In the early 1960s, the town of Mykonos became a centre of the hippie movement, attracting thousands of tourists seeking peace and tranquility. Recognising the profit potential, authorities made extensive investments in modernising the airport, which has since become a significant source of revenue for the local government.

The airport is under the authority of the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority and is among the ten busiest airports in Greece, receiving over 1 million passengers annually. During the winter, traffic is relatively low, with only a few airlines operating flights to Athens. However, in the summer, the airport experiences a surge in traffic, with seasonal flights from over 30 airlines added to the regular schedule.

In December 2015, the privatisation of Mykonos International Airport and 13 other regional airports in Greece was finalised. A joint venture between Fraport AG/Copelouzos Group was awarded a 40-year concession to operate these airports, including Mykonos International Airport. Fraport began managing the airport in April 2017 and announced plans for expansion and remodelling, including increasing the number of departure gates from 6 to 7.

Taxi

Taxis are available 24/7 outside the airport terminal building and offer a door-to-door service. The journey to the town of Mykonos takes around 10 minutes and costs approximately €20. During the high season, there may be a long queue at the taxi rank, so it is worth considering pre-booking a private transfer to avoid the wait.

Bus

Local buses (KTEL) provide a convenient and affordable connection from the airport to Mykonos Town (Chora) and Mykonos Port. The bus stop is located in front of the terminal building, and tickets can be purchased for €1.80-€2.50 in cash from the bus driver. During the high season, buses depart every hour, but in the low season, they are scarcely available and the timetable varies. The journey to Mykonos Town takes around 20 minutes, and the bus also connects to other destinations on the island, including the new port in Tourlos.
