There are many airport roads around the world. Some roads even share their space with runways, although this is becoming less common. For example, the road at Asheville Regional Airport used to be crossed by cars, bicycles and pedestrians, but a new peripheral road was built in 2018 to avoid the runway crossing. Airport Roads in the US

The United States has one of the largest airport networks in the world, with around 19,000 airports across the country. These range from major international hubs to small regional airfields.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) classifies airports that provide scheduled passenger services and have over 10,000 passenger boardings per year as primary airports. These primary airports are associated with a particular city, although they may be located in smaller towns outside of that city.

The US also has a network of highways that provide access to airports and other transportation facilities, including rail and truck terminals, bus terminals, and ferry terminals. This network, known as the Strategic Highway Network (STRAHNET), is important for the country's strategic defence policy and provides defence access, continuity, and emergency capabilities.

With a land area of nearly 52 square miles, the Denver International Airport is the biggest airport in the US. However, the John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City is one of the most prone to delays, with an average delay of more than 20 minutes per aircraft.

Airport Roads in Canada

There are many airport roads around the world, including in Canada. One of the most notable airport roads in Canada is Airport Road in Ontario, which is an 81 km (50-mile) major north-south urban and rural thoroughfare. It runs through the Regional Municipality of Peel and Dufferin County, passing by Toronto Pearson International Airport at its southern terminus.

Airport Road begins at Highway 427 in Mississauga, initially tracing a broad curve as a continuation of Toronto's east-west Dixon Road near the main street entrance of Pearson Airport to the west. It then passes over and under Highway 409 and its complicated ramps that serve as the airport's freeway access. Just to the north, it passes under the elevated tracks of the Union Pearson Express, an airport rail link running to Downtown Toronto, and the guideway of the Terminal Link, the airport's automated people mover.

Airport Road continues through more industrial areas, passing under the rail spur serving the Brampton Assembly (Stellantis Canada) auto plant. At Bovaird Drive, it forms the boundaries of two residential districts; Springdale and Castlemore. At Mayfield Road, it enters the largely rural Town of Caledon, although a suburban warehouse district is under development for a short distance north of Mayfield. From there, the road finally leaves urbanized areas and becomes rural, narrowing down to two lanes.

In addition to Airport Road in Ontario, there are other airport roads in Canada, such as the Veterans Memorial Parkway in London, Ontario, which was formerly known as Airport Road. Canada's National Airport System (NAS) includes 26 airports, with seven in the Atlantic Provinces, three in Quebec, four in Ontario, five in the Prairie Provinces, and four in British Columbia. The three other airports are in the capitals of each territory.

There are many airport roads around the world, some of which are in Asia.

Airport Road, a section of Andrews Avenue in Metro Manila, Philippines, is one example. There is also an Airport Road in Dhaka, Bangladesh, and another in Mumbai, India, where there is also an Airport Road metro station. Baghdad Airport Road is located in Iraq, and the D 89 road (United Arab Emirates) is in Dubai, UAE. Old Airport Road is in Bangalore, India, and there is an Airport Road, a section of Nevada State Route 525, in Carson City, Nevada, US.

A small number of roads share their space with runways. For example, for many years, cars, bicycles and pedestrians would use a road crossing the main airport runway in Asheville, North Carolina, to access military facilities adjacent to the runway. However, improvement works in 2018 built a new peripheral road, allowing traffic to avoid the runway crossing.

There are also airport roads in Huntsville, Alabama, US; Ontario, Canada; and Humboldt County, Nevada, US. Pennsylvania Route 987 was formerly known as Airport Road, and there is a Veterans Memorial Parkway, formerly Airport Road, in London, Ontario, Canada.

Outside of Asia, there are airport roads in Santa Clara, Cuba, and Wyoming, an unincorporated community in Washakie County, US.

There are many airport roads around the world, including in the Middle East.

The Middle East has more than 110 airports and is one of the fastest-growing regions in the world for air travel. Dubai International Airport is the busiest airport in the Middle East and the fifth busiest in the world. It hosted more than 19,000 passenger flights during the first quarter of 2021. Three of the top five busiest airports in the Middle East are in Saudi Arabia, including King Fahd International, which is the world's largest airport, and King Khalid International Airport, which has five terminals.

Roads crossing runways
