Worldport is a 5.2-million-square-foot processing facility with a 7.2-mile perimeter, making it larger than the Mall of America. It is capable of sorting up to 416,000 packages an hour, or 2,000 packages every 17 seconds, with 70 aircraft docks and 155 miles of conveyor belts. The hub processes packages from over 220 countries and territories. Outside the sorting facility are parking spaces for 125 aircraft.

The Worldport system processes 115 packages per second, with a daily average of about two million packages, which can more than double in the weeks before Christmas. Every night, the automated sorting system successfully sorts about 1.2 million packages during a four-hour window. The technology is so good that UPS is now installing it at ground hubs around the country.

The surrounding area has become a hub for companies to set up their own distribution facilities, thanks to UPS' presence. Zappos, Nikon, and Sprint have set up nearby so they can quickly hand off their goods to UPS and ensure they arrive at their destinations as soon as possible.

This new gateway, along with the introduction of the 747-8 wide-body aircraft, has opened up more trade opportunities for small and medium businesses in India, connecting them to international markets in Asia, Europe, and the Americas.

The Bengaluru gateway is UPS's second dedicated airport gateway facility in India, following the opening of its Delhi airport gateway in 2020. With the new flight schedule, the number of flight rotations for UPS in India has almost doubled. The 747-8 aircraft is the largest in the UPS fleet, offering increased capacity and lower emissions by reducing the number of flights required.

UPS's aircraft fleet

UPS Airlines was founded in 1988, and the company initially operated a route network serving 41 countries, connecting the United States and Canada to Asia and Europe. UPS's aircraft fleet currently includes the following types of aircraft: 757-200F, 767-300F, A300-600F, MD-11F, 747-400F, and 747-8F. The company serves more than 220 countries using a combination of more than 500 UPS and chartered aircraft, serving over 200 airports worldwide. UPS was the first major airline in North America to reach full fleet compliance with the new noise rules, with all aircraft in its fleet meeting the strictest noise-reduction standards.

These low-noise UPS systems provide reliable power protection without the disruptive fan noise typical of conventional UPS units.

The noise generated by UPS systems is primarily due to the built-in fans, which kick in when the UPS reaches a certain temperature or load. For example, the fan in a BR1500i unit comes on when the UPS runs on battery and if the load is greater than 650 watts. Similarly, the fan in a SURT unit runs constantly as soon as the unit is plugged in.

To reduce noise, some UPS units do not have fans. For instance, the smallest 230V SmartUPS without a fan is a SUA1000i. Additionally, the BR1000i does not have a fan, despite having ventilation holes in the chassis.
