The new airport was built with a single 10,000-foot (3048-meter) runway, suitable for regional jets and smaller mainline aircraft. The runway was initially planned to be 9,300 feet by 150 feet (2,835 by 46 meters), with subsequent plans to extend it to 11,500 feet. A 9,300-foot runway was eventually constructed, along with a 15,000-square-foot (1,400-square-meter) terminal. The airport has been partially funded by grants from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) totaling around $24.2 million, with additional grants from the FAA totaling approximately $123 million.

On July 13, 2015, the airport changed its name from St. George Municipal Airport to St. George Regional Airport to attract more airline services.
