It is served by over 50 airlines and has flights to points throughout North America and is a major gateway to Europe and Asia.

SFO has a rich history, dating back to World War II when it served as a Coast Guard base and Army Air Corps training and staging base. The airport has undergone several renovations and modifications over the years, including the addition of the South and North Terminals, and the International Terminal in 1984. SFO was also among the first airports in the US to install moving walkways inside a terminal, with a 450-foot set opening in Concourse B in 1964, the world's longest at the time.

There are eight airlines operating out of Terminal B and four airlines operating out of Terminal A. All indoor public areas at SMF have free Wi-Fi provided by the Sacramento County Airport System.

In terms of transportation, SMF offers a range of options, including rental cars, app-based ride-sharing services such as Lyft and Uber, taxis, and shuttles. The airport also provides a free waiting area for those who need to pick up or drop off passengers.
