By Bus

The airport is easily accessible by bus, with the main bus service travelling to Granada city centre. The bus departs after each arrival flight, from outside the arrivals hall, and travels to the following destinations within Granada: Granada Bus Station, La Caleta, Jardines del Triunfo, Gran Vía, the Cathedral, Puerta Real and the Palacio de Congresos. The price for the journey is €3 and tickets can be purchased from the bus driver. The bus timetable varies from day to day and is adjusted according to flight arrivals.

There is also a bus service to Jaen, but this runs less frequently. This service costs just under €9 and takes passengers to the Jaen Bus Station, where connections to other routes are available.

By Taxi

Taxis are available from just outside the arrivals terminal and the journey to downtown Granada takes around 25 minutes in light traffic. The approximate rate is €25-30 from Monday to Friday and €30-35 from 22:00 to 07:00 on weekends and holidays.

By Car

The airport is located along the Autovia A-92 in the direction of Seville. From Granada, take the A-92 motorway towards Seville. From Jaen, take the N-44 to Granada and then the A-92 motorway towards Seville.

History of the airport

Granada Airport, officially Federico García Lorca Granada-Jaén Airport, is located about 9.4 miles (15 km) west of Granada, Spain. The airport began construction in 1970 and opened in 1972 as Aeropuerto de Granada.

The history of aviation in Granada goes back to 1911, when the first recorded flight took place over the city during the Corpus Christi celebrations. This was followed by air shows over the next few years, which were interrupted by World War I. After the war, the Granada Town Council donated land for the construction of a permanent military aerodrome to support the aviation involved in the conflict with Morocco. The aerodrome opened in 1922 and was named Aeródromo Dávila in 1925, in memory of Luis Dávila Ponce de León.

The aerodrome was used as an auxiliary airport for Seville after the war and was opened to civilian traffic in 1929 with the Granada-Seville route. However, it was soon taken over by the military again during the Spanish Civil War. Military activity at the aerodrome finally ceased in 1946, and it became permanently opened to all domestic, civilian, and international tourist traffic.

In the 1950s, the aerodrome started to grow gradually, with the addition of a control tower, a building for civil aviation, and a flying school. However, the lack of success of the operated lines and the need for a hard-surfaced runway led to the construction of a new airport in the municipalities of Chauchina and Santa Fe in the 1960s. The new airport was inaugurated on June 15, 1972, and opened to national and international traffic for both passengers and freight.

In the early 1990s, with Granada chosen to host the 1995 World Ski Championship, the airport facilities underwent significant improvements. These included enlarging the aircraft parking area, lengthening the runway, remodelling the power plant, constructing an administrative building, and enlarging and developing the terminal building.
