History of Goodyear Airport

The history of Goodyear Airport, formerly known as the Goodyear Municipal Airport, began during World War II when it was built as a naval air facility, NAF Litchfield Park. It was then upgraded to a naval air station and renamed NAS Litchfield Park. The land was initially offered by the Goodyear Aerospace Corporation to the US Defense Plant Corporation in 1941, with the US Navy using it to build aircraft flight decks and establish a facility to test fly and deliver aircraft.

After World War II, the primary role of the facility shifted to the storage and preservation of obsolete or excess aircraft for the US Navy, US Marine Corps, and US Coast Guard. During this time, the airfield saw the storage of over 5,000 aircraft. The Korean Conflict brought the airfield back to active duty for a brief period.

In 1968, the Department of Defense and US Coast Guard aircraft preservation and storage operations were consolidated at the Military Aircraft Storage and Disposition Center (MASDC) at Davis-Monthan AFB in Tucson, leading to the closure of NAS Litchfield Park. That same year, the City of Phoenix purchased the property as an alternative airport to Phoenix Sky Harbor for $550,000. The airport became a part of the City of Phoenix's airport system and was renamed Goodyear Airport.

A master plan was crafted for the airport in 1986, which included the construction of a new terminal building, hangars, and support facilities. Over the years, Goodyear Airport has undergone improvements, including the addition of a new terminal, T-hangars, ramp space, tie-downs, and an airport maintenance facility.

Goodyear Airport, covering 789 acres at an elevation of 971 feet above mean sea level, features one asphalt runway and one concrete helipad. The airport is not served by any airlines but remains a significant maintenance spot, attracting aircraft from various domestic and international airlines.
