Erie International Airport, also known as Erie International/Tom Ridge Field, is a public airport located five miles (8.0 km) southwest of Erie, in Erie County, Pennsylvania, United States. The airport is named after former Pennsylvania governor and Secretary of United States Homeland Security, Tom Ridge, who was an Erie native.
The history of the airport dates back to the early 20th century. In 1924, Roger Griswold purchased 22.12 acres (9.0 ha) of land 6 miles (10 km) west of Erie, at the intersection of West Lake and Asbury Roads, intending to use it as an airfield. Soon after, a flight training school was established at the field, known as Griswold Field. However, Griswold Field was short-lived, and it officially closed in 1929 when Griswold moved to Long Island. Despite its closure, aircraft and the flight school continued to utilise the site.
The need for a proper airport in Erie became evident in 1927 when Charles Lindbergh, following his transatlantic flight, included Erie as one of the cities in his nationwide tour. However, Griswold Field was inadequate to accommodate Lindbergh's larger aircraft, the Spirit of St. Louis, and an alternative site could not be found, resulting in a mere flyover by Lindbergh. This event prompted the Erie City Council to consider establishing a municipal airport.
