Akron-Canton Airport history

Akron-Canton Airport (IATA: CAK, ICAO: KCAK, FAA LID: CAK) is a commercial airport in the city of Green, in southern Summit County, Ohio. A small piece of each runway is in Stark County. The airport is located about 14 miles (23 km) southeast of Akron and 10 miles (16 km) northwest of Canton.

The origin of the Akron-Canton Airport (CAK) is rooted in World War II. In September 1940, with the world engulfed in war, the Civil Aeronautics Administration (CAA) announced $500 million in new funds for airport construction in the United States. The Ohio Airports section received a portion of this funding, with $231,600 earmarked for a Class 2 airfield (limited to 20-passenger planes) in Canton. Three sites for the new airport were initially considered, but all were deemed too small. Eventually, a site south of the Greensburg-Greentown Road in Summit County, north of Canton, was selected due to its excellent elevation and room for growth.

Funding for the airport was not without controversy. In June 1943, a Canton attorney, J.E. Kinnison, disputed the use of tax dollars to purchase the property, blocking the resolution. As a result, private funding became essential, with the Timken Roller Bearing Company and nine other leading Stark County industries contributing $100,000 towards the purchase of the land.

The airport was dedicated on October 13, 1946, as the Akron–Canton–Massillon Airport. The name was later changed to Akron–Canton Regional Airport. However, passenger air service did not begin until 1948 when American, United, Capital, and Eastern airlines moved from the Akron Fulton International Airport. The airport has since undergone several expansions and renovations, including the construction of a permanent terminal in 1955 and the addition of a new wing in 2006, increasing the number of gates from 9 to 11.

Akron-Canton Airport covers 2,300 acres (9.3 km2) and has two runways: 01/19, which is 7,601 feet long, and 05/23, which is 8,204 feet long. The airport is jointly operated by Summit County and Stark County and markets itself as "A better way to go," emphasizing the ease of travel compared to Cleveland Hopkins International Airport. It offers nonstop service from 11 destinations, including Charleston, Charlotte, Chicago, Destin/Ft. Walton Beach, and Las Vegas, with airlines such as American, United, Spirit, and Breeze Airways.
