Upgrading your seat on a Delta flight can be done in a variety of ways, including paying cash, using SkyMiles, travelling as a companion with someone who is due an upgrade, or using a Global Upgrade Certificate or Regional Upgrade Certificate. Medallion Members can set their SkyMiles account preferences to have their upgrades requested automatically, or they can request an upgrade at the airport. Upgrades are also available by purchasing them as an add-on in the 'My Trips' section of the Fly Delta app.

However, Medallion members can also request an upgrade at check-in. If an upgrade is not confirmed at the upgrade window or when checking in, the member's pending upgrade request will be added to the airport standby list for a potential upgrade at the gate before boarding. Medallion members can view their spot on the standby list in the Fly Delta App upon check-in and on the Gate Information Display screens at the airport.
If Medallion members travelling alone opt out of receiving automatic Delta Comfort upgrades, they can request a Delta Comfort upgrade to any available seat or only a window/aisle seat when checking in for a flight. Once the member has selected their seat preference at check-in, their upgrade request will be added to the Airport Standby list. Upgrades will be cleared based on availability and clearance priority. Medallion members who opt in to Complimentary Upgrades before check-in will receive top priority within their eligibility window.
Medallion members can also use their miles to upgrade other passengers, even if they are not travelling. To do so, they must be logged in at delta.com or be an authorized user of the account when upgrading with a Reservations Specialist. Medallion members can also use their miles to upgrade on certain Delta-operated, Virgin Atlantic-operated, Air France/KLM-operated, and Aeromexico-operated flights.

GUCs are available exclusively for Diamond Medallion members and offer upgrades on both international and domestic Delta flights, as well as select flights with KLM, Air France, Virgin Atlantic, Korean Air, and Aeromexico.
