Upgrading your seat on a Norwegian flight is possible, and the airline offers two ways to do so: bidding and buying. Bidding for an upgrade is generally the most cost-effective method, while buying an upgrade usually provides a small discount compared to purchasing a premium ticket at the time of booking. Norwegian also offers the option to purchase additional services, such as overhead cabin bags, priority boarding, and checked baggage. These services can be purchased online or at the airport, with different prices applying to each purchase method.

What You'll Learn

Bidding for an upgrade
Depending on availability, Norwegian regularly offers the opportunity to either "buy up" or "bid" for an upgrade to Premium. Bidding is usually the best deal, while buying gives a small discount over buying Premium at the original time of purchase. You will receive an email about a week before your flight, offering a purchased, confirmed upgrade or the ability to bid for one. The confirmed upgrade cost seems to be based on your class of service and the amount paid for the original ticket. For example, the confirmed upgrade cost for one passenger was listed as 4500 SEK or $466 USD, while another passenger paid 2450 SEK or $425 USD for a successful bid.
Bidding closes approximately 72 hours before departure, and bids are usually accepted or declined 48 hours before the flight. If you are unsure, you can use the live chat system on Norwegian's website, or contact them via Facebook Messenger, where an agent can quickly confirm your seat.

Buying an upgrade outright
Norwegian Airlines offers passengers the opportunity to upgrade their tickets to a Premium service. This option is available at a discounted rate when purchased with your original ticket, or at a higher rate closer to the time of departure.
The Premium service includes two free checked bags, fast-track security, and onboard meals with beer, wine, and soft drinks. Lounge access at some airports is also included, but only if you have a Premium Flex ticket. This ticket can only be booked at a high rate.
Upgrading to Premium will also get you more legroom, with a seat pitch of 46". This is a reduction from the previous 55", due to Norwegian adding more rows to accommodate increased demand.
If you want to buy an upgrade outright, you can do so by contacting Norwegian Airlines through their live chat or Facebook Messenger. You can also wait for an email offering a purchased, confirmed upgrade. This email is usually sent about a week before departure.
It is recommended that you avoid buying the upgrade at the full price, as bidding for an upgrade tends to be a better deal. However, if you are looking for more comfort and convenience, buying an upgrade outright can be a good option, especially if you are paying to check bags anyway.

Baggage allowance
Norwegian Airlines offers five different types of tickets. The prices of these tickets vary depending on the route. Each ticket type includes different baggage allowances.
Every passenger travelling with Norwegian Airlines can bring one bag to be stored under the seat in front. The dimensions for this are 30 x 20 x 38 cm. For passengers with LowFare tickets, this is the only bag allowed.
For passengers with LowFare+, Flex, Premium, or PremiumFlex tickets, you are also allowed a cabin bag to be stored in the overhead lockers. Your overhead bag should not be larger than 55 x 40 x 23 cm. Combined, these two bags should not weigh more than 15 kg, or 10 kg if you have a LowFare+ ticket.
If your ticket doesn't include checked baggage, you can add a bag up to four hours before your flight. The size limits for checked bags are 250 x 79 x 112 cm, with a maximum circumference of 300 cm. Any bag weighing between 23 kg and 32 kg will be charged extra fees for excess baggage. If you are checking in more than one bag, the combined weight of your bags should not be more than 74 kg.
Excess baggage charges apply to any items over the one- or two-bag allowance (depending on your fare type) and to baggage that exceeds the weight limit of 23 kg. Passengers are permitted to check a maximum of two bags (included allowance or prepaid) and any additional baggage will be considered excess.
Different prices apply to purchases made online or at the airport. Checked baggage is charged per item, per flight. Baggage rates will vary depending on your itinerary.
If you arrive at the airport with hand baggage that exceeds the standard baggage limits, you will be charged for it to be stored in the hold – £50 for domestic flights and £85 for international flights.
Sports equipment will not be accepted as normal checked baggage. You must add this to your booking.

Lounge access
Previously, Norwegian offered lounge access to all Premium fares passengers at certain airports, including London Gatwick and Los Angeles. However, as of 21st December 2018, they stopped providing lounge access with most premium tickets. Now, only "Premium Flex" ticket holders can access the lounges. This change has left a sour taste for some passengers who purchased Premium tickets expecting lounge access as an advertised benefit. Norwegian has clarified that all passengers who booked a Premium fare before 21st December 2018, will still have lounge access, but they must collect a voucher at check-in.
For those who are not "Premium Flex" ticket holders, there are other ways to access airport lounges. Norwegian Reward members can purchase lounge access at a 15% discount. Additionally, Priority Pass offers memberships that allow travellers to buy lounge access, and some memberships include free access. Norwegian Reward members can also earn points for airport lounge access.
At Oslo Airport, lounge access is available for purchase, with prices depending on the time of entry and the type of credit card used. The SAS lounges at Oslo Airport can be accessed by purchasing online or at the reception desk, provided there is capacity. These lounges offer food, drinks, WiFi, and reading materials.

Seat selection
Norwegian Air offers passengers the option to select their seats before checking in. This can be done online via the Norwegian Air website or through Facebook Messenger. Passengers travelling with children or individuals with disabilities will be seated together within the same row and aisle, free of charge.
If you have a LowFare+ or Flex ticket, you can select your preferred seat before checking in online. If you do not select a seat, the booking system will automatically assign you a seat within the same row and aisle as the rest of your party, or at most, one row or aisle away.
For those who prefer a window or aisle seat, you can pay a little extra to choose your favourite seat. It is recommended to book your seat as early as possible, and at the latest, up to one hour before departure.
Norwegian Air also offers the option to upgrade your seat from Economy to Premium. This can be done by logging into your account on the Norwegian Air website and following the upgrade prompts. Depending on availability, Norwegian may also offer the opportunity to "buy up" or "bid" on an upgrade to Premium.
