History of the airport
OKC Will Rogers International Airport, formerly known as Will Rogers World Airport, is a passenger airport located in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The airport is named after Will Rogers, a comedian and legendary cowboy who was an Oklahoma native. Rogers died in an airplane crash in 1935, near Utqiagvik, Alaska. The airport first opened in 1911 as Oklahoma City Municipal Airfield and was renamed in Rogers' honour in 1941. During World War II, it served as a major training facility for the United States Army Air Forces, with many fighter and bomber units receiving their initial training there.
In the late 1990s, the Oklahoma City Airport Trust deemed the 1967-built terminal building unsuitable, and in 2001, preparations for renovating the airport were launched. The old twin concourses were demolished to make way for a larger, modern terminal with integrated concourses and high ceilings. The airport was the hub of Great Plains Airlines, a regional airline based in Tulsa, from 2001 until the airline ceased operations in 2004. On May 31, 2013, an EF-1 tornado hit the airport, causing minor damage.
In 2024, the city council approved a name change from "Will Rogers World Airport" to "OKC Will Rogers International Airport" to market the airport to a wider audience. The airport has since expanded its routes and was named one of the top domestic airports in the US by Travel + Leisure in 2025. OKC Will Rogers International Airport permanently hosts the Ninety Nines Museum of Women Pilots, showcasing the achievements of women in aviation.
