The airport's terminals have undergone numerous renovations and rebuilds over the years. Terminal 1, formerly known as the South Terminal, was renamed the Harvey Milk Terminal in 2024 after a $2,400,000,000 modernisation project. This terminal is composed of Boarding Areas B and C, which have 26 and 11 gates, respectively. Terminal 2, previously known as the Central Terminal, was rebuilt and completed in 2011, followed by Terminal 3 East, which was completed in 2015. San Francisco International Airport (SFO) offers non-stop flights to Asia, South Pacific, Europe, Canada, Mexico, and the US. The airport experiences delays in overcast weather when only two of its four runways can be used.
SFO has two sets of parallel runways that are perpendicular to each other. The runways are very close together, with only a 750-foot centerline separation. This means that when visibility is poor, SFO can only safely operate one runway for arrivals and one for departures. According to Doug Yakel, SFO can operate at its full capacity of 60 arrivals per hour about two-thirds of the time. When the weather gets bad, arrival rates are traditionally halved or reduced even further if a runway shift is required.
In addition, SFO makes use of simultaneous close parallel approach operations, which allow for a higher density of aircraft operations than would otherwise be possible given the close spacing of its runways. However, these operations require 1600 ft ceilings and 4 miles of visibility due to the requirement that aircraft maintain visual contact during these operations. As a result, when the weather is overcast and ceilings are lower, SFO may only be able to use two runways, causing delays.
To mitigate these delays, SFO can sometimes land around 35 airplanes per hour in poor visibility using PRM/SOIA. Starting in summer 2013, FAA procedure changes will make it easier to achieve this rate without PRM/SOIA. However, operations will still be severely curtailed in bad weather compared to the regular 60-per-hour rate.
