Shanghai Pudong International Airport is a major hub for air travel in China. The airport currently has two main passenger terminals, Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, which are served by four operational runways. Terminal 1 opened on 1 October 1999, along with a 4,000-metre runway and a cargo hub. The exterior of Terminal 1 is shaped like a seagull, and it has 28 gates, 13 of which are double-decker gates. The terminal has a capacity of 20 million passengers and covers an area of 280,000 square metres. The third level of Terminal 1 is dedicated to departures, the second level to arrivals, and the ground floor to luggage claim and transfers.
