On November 23, 1996, Ethiopian Airlines Flight 961, a Boeing 767-200ER, was hijacked en route from Addis Ababa to Nairobi by three Ethiopians seeking asylum in Australia. The hijackers refused to allow the pilot to land and refuel, leading to a crash landing in the Indian Ocean near the Comoros Islands.
